Tonkatsu Tamafuji, nestled in the heart of Honolulu at 449 Kapahulu Ave, is a must-visit Japanese tonkatsu restaurant that delivers an authentic and deeply satisfying culinary experience. Specializing in expertly breaded and perfectly fried pork loin cutlets alongside a variety of katsu styles, this eatery captivates both locals and visitors with its dedication to quality and detail.
What sets Tonkatsu Tamafuji apart is its mouthwatering menu showcasing a spectrum of indulgent dishes that make traditional tonkatsu shine. The Pork Loin Set Tonkatsu (6 ounces) features a beautifully crisp, light, and airy breading that enhances the juicy tenderness of premium pork—a delicate balance that fans rave about. For those who appreciate nuanced flavors, the aged Jyukusei Pork Loin Katsu Teishoku is a standout, offering rich, deep umami notes in both the hefty 450g US$38.00 set and the slightly lighter 160g cheese katsu version available for US$25.50.
The adventurous will delight in the diverse offerings like the Oyster Katsu and the variety-packed Mix Katsu Set, which includes shrimp, oyster, pork, chicken, and even onion katsu—a composition curated for an exciting multi-textural experience. Shrimp katsu lovers swear by the perfectly crispy crust embracing tender, flavorful shrimp, with many recommending enjoying the oyster katsu without dipping in sauce to preserve its natural briny goodness. The Pork Loin Cutlet Egg Toji Set cooked in rich katsuo dashi offers a comforting, sizzling plate experience, layering tender tonkatsu beneath a delicate egg custard that’s deeply soothing.
Tonkatsu Tamafuji thoughtfully complements these dishes with choices of seasoned rice options like the fragrant shiso rice, pickled plum with hijiki seaweed rice, or hearty 5-grain and brown rice selections. Accompanying sides such as complementary pickled vegetables and red miso soup with clams round out the meal, creating a harmonious balance of textures and flavors that elevate each bite.
The dining atmosphere exudes casual warmth with attentive, friendly service that’s patient enough to guide first-timers through the unique dining rituals, such as grinding your own sesame seeds and crafting your personalized dipping sauce. Although the popularity of Tonkatsu Tamafuji means waits can be long—sometimes up to two hours—it’s clear from repeat customers and reservations booked months in advance that the culinary rewards are worth the wait. The passionate team even maintains a waitlist system to ease the process, and seasoned diners recommend arriving early or reserving ahead to experience the meal without the extended wait.
Guests consistently praise the consistently moist, tender proteins encased in crunchy, yet light batter, perfectly paired with house-made tonkatsu sauce that bursts with umami. The attention to detail and quality craftsmanship make each dish feel like a lovingly prepared feast. Whether savoring the oysters with their surprisingly perfect tartar sauce or the savory pork loin cuts, the flavors resonate long after the last bite.
In essence, Tonkatsu Tamafuji is not just a restaurant—it’s a destination for those seeking an immersive tonkatsu journey in Honolulu. Every dish tells a story of tradition, careful preparation, and refined taste, set against the backdrop of genuine Japanese hospitality. For anyone craving authentic Japanese comfort food done with precision and heart, Tonkatsu Tamafuji promises a memorable, deeply satisfying meal that calls you back again and again.
Fantastic katsu, really light and airy breading while the protein is still moist and tender (whether that's the ebi, chicken, or pork). I got the mixed katsu set, and really liked all the different options. The shrimp had the best flavor and texture overall, with the pork being a close second. The oyster katsu was good, though I suggest not dipping it into the sauce since the flavor might get overpowered otherwise.
The food was absolutely delicious. Their service was great. The people there were very kind and taught us how to do everything, because it was our first time going. The wait was very long, but we did not have a reservation. I don't really know how they do reservations. Would definitely come again.
It was good. I like the different types of rice and miso soup options (shiso rice was delicious). Meat was moist and batter was crunchy. We waited 2 hours, not worth waiting that long for. Would only recommend if there's no wait.
This was high on my list too get a reservation and I finally procured one! You have to book 3 months in advance or wait in line right before the restaurant opens. The food was great, especially the oysters and shrimp. The pork is good, but the 300g was too much for me. The beer came out ice cold and tasted fantastic. It was a great meal and fantastic service. I would recommend and return.
We were lucky enough to place our names on the list outside and got called in for the first service for lunch. I had the tonkatsu medallions and oysters. Tonkatsu was really good, but those oysters were the best I've ever eaten. The tartar sauce they served with it was a perfect match which is crazy because I generally don't like tartar sauce at all. Can't wait to go back next time I'm back in Hawai'i.
The tonkatsu here is absolutely insane — seriously, one of the best I’ve had. It’s done proper Japanese-style, super crispy and perfectly cooked. I live in New Jersey, and honestly, it’s hard to find something this good even in NYC. The rice and miso soup are unlimited too, which is a nice bonus. I’m definitely coming back the next time I’m in Hawaii. Just thinking about it makes me crave tonkatsu again.
Honestly one of the best Katsu places I have ever had. Highly recommend. The wait around dinner time can be a bit long so plan that in your schedule as it is worth it!
I’ve been here on three different trips and I’ve never been disappointed! The crunch on this tempura is truly like no other, and the oil flavor is very clean. I’d recommend dining in over getting takeout (pictured), but if you have limited time/don’t want to wait 1+ hour during peak wait times, takeout is a good option. The only con is that the crunch quickly gets soggy in the takeout box and you don’t get the special rice or soup that’s included in the dine-in experience. It’s definitely worth it to wait if you have the time. Another pro to dining in is the sesame seed grinding for your tonkatsu sauce. The aroma is very fresh and unique! You can choose between the sweet and savory sauce to dip, and I liked a combination of both. We ordered a 5pc shrimp katsu set (pictured), 1pc pork katsu, 1pc oyster katsu, clam miso soup (seasonal), and the seaweed rice. The shrimp tempura is a shared favorite between my mom and I, but the pork and oyster are great too. For drinks, I’d recommend the grapefruit shochu as a fresh, fruity cocktail to enjoy alongside the katsu. It’s manufactured in California so you can probably find it on the mainland as well, but I think any fizzy drink will complement the fried tempura nicely. Staff and atmosphere are friendly, clean, and pleasant. While dining in, the servers walk around with a basket of shredded cabbage and were kind enough to give me 3 extra handfuls to enjoy with their delicious sesame dressing. I will be coming back for my 4th visit soon!
